History of Volvo

The name Volvo means “I roll” in Latin and the company was originally begun in 1911. Started with the intention of being a company that manufactured ball bearings, Volvo didn’t start production on actual vehicles until 1926, two years after Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson teamed up to begin this new endeavor. The very first Volvo car emerged in 1927 with only a few hundred models, and the first Volvo truck came out the following year. Though Volvo saw slow and steady progress throughout the 1930s, it didn’t see major growth until after World War II and has continued to be an extremely prominent name in the auto industry. Volvo has experienced many partnerships and business dealings over the years, but one of the most recent of this big changes occurred in 1999 when the Volvo Group sold Volvo Car Corporation to Ford Motor Company for $6.45 billion. Volvo continues to grow and evolve with the changing times and is known as one of the leading producers of high-quality vehicles.

What’s so Great About Volvo?

1. Volvo Was the First to Implement the Three-Point Seatbelt

The modern seatbelt that we see in every modern car was first patented in 1955 by Americans Roger W. Griswold and Hugh DeHaven and Volvo was the first company to get on board. The patent was released by 1959 and the rest is history.

2. Volvo is the Perfect First Car

When contemplating the first vehicle for their children, parents often choose a car that is sturdy, dependable, and trustworthy on the road. The older, stable Volvos are fairly low-maintenance, reliable, and Volvo repairs aren’t needed too frequently. Additionally, Volvos tend to last a long time.

3. Volvo is Incredibly Safe

In addition to its innovations with the three-point seatbelt patent, Volvo is also responsible for helping to develop the first rear-facing child seat. Volvo has always strived to put safety first; some of the common Volvo staples that we’re familiar with are:

  • 360-Degree View Camera
  • Driver Alert Control
  • Pilot Assist (adaptive cruise control and lane keeping aid)
  • Blind Spot Information System
  • City Safety technology

4. Volvo Emphasizes Luxury

Though it’s far from being the most expensive foreign-made car, Volvo is known for being an incredibly comfortable and luxurious car. Knowing that your car was made with quality in mind is important, knowing that it’s safe is vital, but being comfortable in your car? That’s a bonus, and Volvo has comfort down pat. Some common luxury features include:

  • Heated Front and Rear Seats
  • Powered Seats with Memory Profile
  • Heated Steering Wheel
  • Dual Climate Control

5. Volvo Utilizes Cutting-Edge Technology

One of the best things about well-made, high-quality cars is the technological capabilities that almost certainly come along with them. Volvos are certainly no exception with their navigation systems, pilot assist, driver alert control, voice activation, and so much more! Some of our favorite technological advancements available in Volvos are:

  • Touchscreen
  • 1,400 Watt Sound System
  • Hands-Free Tailgate
  • Sensus Navigation
  • Wifi

There is amazing peace of mind that comes with driving a car that was made to last. Volvo cars seem to hold up very well and because of their unique history, their value of safety, luxury, and technological addictions, they are worth the cost you need to put into their maintenance. Though Volvo repair can be a little bit more complicated that repairs for a standard car, a Volvo service mechanic will be able to tackle your Volvo repair needs better than anyone else.
